Motorists caught driving 6mph over motorway limit hit with driving ban

Motorists caught driving at 46mph could face disqualification, fines and penalty points on their licence. A warning has been issued to drivers and road users after a motorist was temporarily banned from driving after being clocked at 46mph on the motorway. The 49 year old man appeared at Worcester Magistrates' Court last week.

He was detected by a variable speed camera in August of the previous year, driving at 46mph - six miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 40mph. Lawton, from St Michael's Road, Rugeley, Staffordshire, was captured by a variable speed camera on August 28, 2024, while driving between junction 15A and junction 15 of the M1, near Northampton. Lawton also faced court for two counts of exceeding a temporary 50mph speed restriction on the M5.

For the M1 speeding offence, Lawton received a six-month disqualification and three penalty points on his licence. He was also ordered to pay a GBP40 fine and costs of GBP130. Band A fines are for those who have been caught by a speed camera or stopped at the roadside by the police for driving slightly over the speed limit, reports Birmingham Live[1].

You will receive a warning or a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) with a GBP100 fine and three points on your licence. According to the RAC, Band B fines apply when you have exceeded the speed limit by a significant margin. You may face a minimum fine of GBP100 and three or six penalty points on your licence, the roadside recovery group has added.

You might also find yourself in court if the offence took place in a built-up area or near a school.

Band C applies when you've been caught significantly exceeding the speed limit.

You could face a fine of 125 per cent to 175 per cent of your weekly income, along with six penalty points or a driving ban.
