Minister Hails Logistics Sector as “Unstoppable Force” at Logistics UK Conference

The UK's logistics sector has been praised as an "unstoppable force for economic growth" and central to government strategy by Minister for the Future of Roads, Lilian Greenwood. Her keynote address at the inaugural Logistics UK Annual Conference highlighted the industry's vital role in supporting national development. Speaking to more than 250 logistics professionals at London's QEII Conference Centre on 4 June, Greenwood stressed the government's intention to work collaboratively with the sector. "Logistics lies at the heart of government's plan for change," she said. "We are ready to work with the sector every step of the way."
Sector strength and challenges
The conference also marked the launch of The Logistics Report 2025, which outlines the scale and influence of the UK logistics sector.
The report shows logistics generates GBP170 billion for the economy and employs over 8% of the national workforce. It includes insights from over 500 member businesses and highlights current and emerging trends across freight and supply chain operations. Phil Roe, President of Logistics UK, opened the event with a call for stronger recognition of the sector's contribution. "Logistics is not a background operation," he said. "It is a driver of growth and a barometer of economic efficiency.
When logistics thrives, the economy thrives." He urged policymakers to treat logistics as a "foundational sector" in the UK's Industrial Strategy.
Focus on decarbonisation and skills
The Minister acknowledged the pressures facing the logistics sector--particularly in decarbonisation and skills development. She affirmed the government's continued support for the Generation Logistics campaign to promote careers in logistics and said the Department for Transport is committed to open dialogue with the industry.
She concluded her remarks with thanks: "Thank you for keeping the wheels turning, driving economic growth and improving lives. We are listening." Logistics UK says the 2025 report provides a detailed benchmark for industry leaders and policymakers alike.
