M60 traffic RECAP: Man dies in horror car crash as major motorway shut by police for HOURS

A man in his 50s has tragically died following a horror crash on the M60 in the early hours of this morning. Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 3.56am. Sadly, the victim was pronounced dead on the motorway.

M60 clockwise has re-opened

National Highways has confirmed that the M60 has re-opened clockwise. They issued an update on Twitter: "The #M60 clockwise has reopened between J22 and J23.

Anti-clockwise remains closed between J23 near (Ashton-Under-Lyne) and J21 (Chadderton) due to a Police Led Incident which occurred shortly before 04:00 this morning."

List reveals diversions in place and where to go instead

Drivers who need to reach their destinations via the M60 have been advised to follow the below routes. Anti-clockwise - follow the square diversion symbol

  • Leave M60 anti-clockwise at J23 and follow exit slip road.
  • At M60 J23/A6140 junction, turn right onto A6140 northbound.
  • At A6140 junction, turn right onto A6140 (Lord Sheldon Way) eastbound.
  • At A6140/A6043 roundabout, follow the A6043 eastbound.
  • At A6043/A627 junction, turn left onto A627 northbound.
  • At A627 King Street roundabout, follow the A627 (Oldham Way) westbound.
  • At A627/A62 roundabout, follow the A62 southbound.
  • At A62/A6104 junction, turn right onto A6104 westbound.
  • At A6104/Semple Way junction, turn right onto Semple Way northbound.
  • At Semple Way/A663 junction, continue straight ahead on to M60 J21 anti-clockwise entry slip road and re-join M60.

  • At A62/A627 roundabout, join A627 eastbound and follow for 0.6 km.

  • At A627/A6043 junction, turn right onto A6043 westbound and follow for 0.2 km.
  • At A6043/A6410 roundabout, join the A6140 westbound and follow for 2.5 km.

Drivers warned over traffic disruption

Drivers have been warned of traffic disruption on the M60. National Highways urged people to re-route their journeys.

They said: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."

What lanes have been closed ?

National Highways has confirmed that the motorway is closed anti-clockwise. A spokesperson said: "The M60 in Greater Manchester is closed anti-clockwise between J23 near (Ashton-Under-Lyne) and J21 (Chadderton) due to a police-led Incident which occurred shortly before 04:00 this morning. "National Highways Traffic Officers are also in attendance assisting with traffic management.

The clockwise carriageway is closed between J22 and J23. "Greater Manchester Police continue their investigation work at the scene. National Highways Traffic Officers are also in attendance assisting with traffic management."

Greater Manchester Police issued a statement and said: "At around 3:56am this morning (Sunday 29 June 2025) emergency services responded to reports of a road traffic collision on the M60 between junctions 21-20.

"Sadly, a 57-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Lane closures remain in place this morning while officers conduct their enquiries."
