A crash has closed lanes and is causing delays on the M6 near Birmingham this afternoon, June 22.

The crash, reported to be between a car and lorry on live traffic system INRIX, is causing delays of around 30 minutes, with access to Birmingham city centre severely delayed.

It is understood the crash occurred just before 1pm and there are now delays and congestion "in both directions" from junction 6, which connects to the A38 and Birmingham city centre[1], and junction 7.

Traffic was held for around forty minutes, but was released at around 1:38pm.

It is understood that the collision involved a vehicle crossed through the central barrier, but we have contacted West Midlands Police[3] for more information on the nature of the incident.

The latest update from live traffic system INRIX reported: "Severe delays and two lanes closed due to accident, car and lorry involved on M6 in both directions from J6 A38 Tyburn Road (Spaghetti Junction) to J7 A34 Birmingham[4] Road (Great Barr).

"Traffic has now been released on the northbound carriageway following a short hold.

"Two lanes remain closed in both directions."

The severity of the crash is not known at this time, but police are reported to be at the scene assisting with a clean up.

Live cameras on the motorway show long snaking queues on the M6 northbound, with vehicles waiting in the hard shoulder.

National Highways has also reported that two out of four lanes are closed.

A National Highways spokesperson said on X: "2 (of 4) lanes are CLOSED on the M6 in both directions between J7 #GreatBarr and J6 #A38M due to a collision where the vehicle has crossed through the central reservation barrier.

"Police are on scene and vehicle recovery is being arranged.

Delays of 30 mins both directions."
