Lorry fire closes road for 11 hours and sparks miles of traffic

The incident occurred at 3.32am on Monday (June 9), on the A34 southbound near Chieveley. Firefighters from the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service from Newbury and Theale attended the blaze, alongside a Water Carrier from Bracknell fire station. Three crews and one officer from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene.

Two firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus used one hose reel, one main jet, the water carrier, and foam to put out the fire and make the scene safe. The scene was handed over to National Highways. "They were on scene for approximately four hours and 36 minutes."

National Highways closed the road following the incident as the lorry was cleared, with the closure in place for more than 11 hours. Resurfacing was required as a result of the blaze with photographs shared by National Highways showing the lorry blackened by flames with charred damage across the road. A spokesperson for National Highways said on Monday afternoon said: "The A34 southbound remains closed within M4 at Chieveley following an earlier lorry fire. "Substantial damage has been caused to the road surface and a resurfacing operation will be taking place.

"There's a 30-minute delay and three miles of congestion on approach."
