UKWA Partners with Mentor Training in Drive to Zero Harm

UKWA Partners with Mentor Training in Drive to Zero Harm : Speaking at a Workplace Transport Safety Day hosted by leading material handling training provider Mentor on 29 April, UKWA CEO Clare Bottle called for warehousing operators to prioritise safety every day, insisting that no injury is inevitable and that all harm can and should be prevented. Clare highlighted the human cost of accidents at work, as well as the considerable financial penalties involved when injuries occur in the workplace - urging proactive, company-wide commitment to risk management. "The goal for all warehouse operations is clear: zero harm.

Achieving it means learning from past incidents, investing in training, enforcing clear standards, and fostering a culture where safety is everyone's responsibility," Clare said. The Safety Day, which was specifically dedicated to the warehouse sector, provided attendees with the latest insights from thought-leaders within the industry, including special guest Lisa Ramos, a logistics office worker who lost her leg in a forklift accident nearly 20 years ago. Lisa has become an inspirational speaker about safety and the long-lasting impact of life-changing injury at work.

In addition to seminar sessions, visitors had the opportunity to engage in a practical forklift driving experience, under the guidance of a skilled instructor. For those in non-operational roles, who may never have been in the driving seat themselves, this hands-on experience provided an opportunity to understand the risks operators face day-to-day. Adam Smith, Mentor Training's Commercial Director, said, "We were delighted to host this event, along with the UK Warehousing Association.

We were able to share industry updates, group safety sessions and a valuable networking opportunity. Most importantly, we were able to remind industry representatives of the vital importance of training in reducing risk and hopefully eventually eliminating avoidable accidents." In line with its mission to raise standards, UKWA launched a Certificate of Professional Competence for Warehouse Managers last year.

This globally recognised qualification includes a specific module on workplace safety, helping to embed a culture of risk awareness and proactive management across the sector. Summarising the event, Clare concluded, "Most warehouses are safe. But safety must never be taken for granted.

Every day, every shift, every decision matters - because every worker deserves to come home safely."
