Tribute to bin man killed in crash with his own lorry

Torbay Council has issued a tribute to a bin man who was killed after being struck by his own lorry yesterday (Tuesday, May 27). The bin man, who was a local man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene at Higher Warberry Road, in Torquay[1], at around 12.45pm. The man's next of kin have been informed and the incident was reported to the Health and Safety Executive.
The bin man worked for SWISCo, who undertake waste management service on behalf of Torbay[2] Council. The council have released a statement sharing their condolences for the victim's family, friends and colleagues. The council said it was cooperating fully with the authorities as the circumstances are investigated.
Torbay Council[3] said: "Today we are sharing the sad news of the passing of a SWISCo operative following an incident involving one of our SWISCo trucks on Tuesday, May 27. "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are first and foremost with the individual's family, friends, and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time. We are doing everything we can to support those affected and are in contact with the family providing any assistance they may need.
"The safety and wellbeing of our teams is our highest priority, and we are fully cooperating with the authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. We ask for patience and understanding as we work through the details." The leader of the council, Cllr David Thomas, said: "I am deeply saddened to hear that one of our SWISCo waste crew members passed away following this tragic incident.
My condolences and thoughts are with the family, loved ones and our colleagues at this very difficult time. "This incident has been deeply upsetting for the family and all our colleagues, and we ask that the community is mindful of the impact this will be having on them over the coming days and weeks." Devon and Cornwall Police[4] are appealing for anyone with information or footage of the incident[5], involving a white bin lorry, to get in touch with the police force.
