Neither electric nor diesel
Hyundai is a worldwide known vehicle brand and they are also introducing an innovative engine which uses hydrogen. They have already tested it on lorries by driving 10 million kilometers. This is a remarkable investment on technology to try to pollute the environment the least possible.
This Hyundai technology has arrived in the United States and the country is open to receiving it and is being used on different means of transport[1]. Let's find out more about hydrogen engines and what they may offer us.
Hyundai origins
This is a South Korean vehicle company founded in 1967 and arrived in the United States of America in 1986. The brand is known for its high quality products and the types of vehicles they produce such as small and family cars, trucks and lorries, among others.
Hyundai exports to more than 190 countries and some of them are the United States, India, China or Brazil.
Hydrogen lorries
Hyundai is also known for its initiative on making the same vehicles and maintaining their quality, but being less harmful to the environment. The company's investments on new technology to make fuel that does not pollute has become an important action for the manufacturing of vehicles around the world. The latest invention is hydrogen engines[2], which have been already tested on lorries. XCIENT Fuel Cell is the name of the hydrogen lorries, they do not use common engines that use diesel or petrol, instead they use hydrogen.
This is a gas that transforms into electricity inside the engine which makes the lorry move. This is environmentally friendly because the vehicle does not expel the common dark smoke we are used to seeing through the exhausts, but what it is expelled now is steamed water. This remarkable idea has become one of the most clean techniques to use vehicles.
The hydrogen lorries began to be used in 2020 in Switzerland and, later on, more countries were added to the testing situation being the United States the most recent one.
The United States and hydrogen lorries
The country has included the hydrogen lorries very well, even though the United States is not a very easy country to introduce new alternative vehicles. They are showing a huge interest in being one of the countries that starts using this new environmentally friendly engine, by taking 21 hydrogen lorries to a factory called Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America. What's more, they are installing spots to hydrogen lorries around the country.
Is hydrogen the future of vehicles?
Hyundai does believe it is the future of vehicles, it relies very deeply on this green engine due to the positive results of the testing.
This is what the world needs, being able to keep using technology, that we probably could not live without anymore, and the avoidance of pollution. Driving is a daily action, so the inclusive of hydrogen on cars instead of petrol or diesel is a big step into the improvement of the environment. It is true that electric vehicles already exist, made to have more green technology.
However, lorries and heavy vehicles have to drive long distances and even transport a lot of weight, so hydrogen is the perfect match for these types of situations - much more than electric engines. We tend to think the advance of technology is not on the same path as being environmentally friendly, but Hyundai is proving the opposite. The company is looking to be part of the companies fighting for green actions to make our planet a better place.
