M53 crash live updates as 49-year-old man confirmed dead

Traffic has ground to a halt on the M53[1] today following a fatal crash. The motorway is closed due to the incident near to the Eastham exit. At around 8.15am, emergency services received reports that a white Peugeot van had been involved in a crash with a red VW car near to the Eastham exit of the M53.

A 49-year-old man, from Wirral[2], was treated for his injuries at the scene[3] before being taken to hospital but has since died. The man's family are being supported by specialist officers. An investigation into the cause of the collision remains ongoing.

A 64-year-old man from the Wirral remained at the scene and helped officers with their enquiries. The M53 Southbound will remain closed until around 4.30pm at the earliest, police have said.
