M11 fire today: Motorway partly closed for 18 hours after fire sees four taken to hospital

A vehicle fire in the early hours of Tuesday (May 27) caused long delays on the M11 southbound near Cambridge. Four people were taken to hospital after the fire. One lane was closed for emergency repairs between junction 14 at Girton and junction 13 at Madingley Road.
An East of England Ambulance Service[1] spokesperson said: "We were called around 12.50am this morning to a vehicle fire on the southbound M11 between junction 14 and 13. Three ambulances, an ambulance officer vehicle and the Hazardous Area Response Team were sent to the scene. "Four patients - two adults and two children - were transported to Addenbrooke's Hospital for further assessment and treatment."
Firefighters from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue[2] spent nearly two hours putting out the flames. They were called at about 12.40am and left the scene at around 2.30am. Traffic monitoring company Inrix first reported the incident at around 1.30am.
In an update at around 8.15am, Inrix stated: "One lane closed and queueing traffic due to emergency resurfacing repairs on M11 Southbound from J14 A14 J31 (Girton / Cloverleaf Interchange) to J13 A1303 Madingley Road (Madingley / Cambridge). "Lane one (of two) remains closed after a vehicle fire early this morning." The road remained partly closed at 7pm. CambridgeshireLive brought you live updates as we got them.
