Live: M4 delays after multi-vehicle rush-hour crash

There were long delays on the M4 at rush hour[1] due to a multi-vehicle crash this afternoon, Wednesday, May 21. Three lanes were closed between junction 19 and 20, with long tailbacks. Roads and traffic monitoring[2] site, Inrix, reported the crash at 5.03pm.

It said: "One lane blocked and queueing traffic due to multi-vehicle accident on M4 eastbound at J19 M32 (Bristol). Congestion to J20 (M5 interchange). Also blocking a lane on the exit slip."

National Highways said: "Due to the ongoing complex recovery process, involving an EV, the incident between J20 #M5 #Almondsbury and J19 #Hambrook eastbound is now an up and over closure. "Traffic is being diverted via the exit and entry slip roads. Delays are in excess of 60 mins, please plan ahead."

The incident had cleared by 8pm.
