Key Road, Rail and Energy Projects Progressing Across Greece

Major national road, rail, energy, and telecommunications infrastructure projects are moving forward as planned, said Greek Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis this week, following a meeting of the Government Council of Economic Policy. During the session, Hatzidakis presented a detailed roadmap covering 12 key projects aimed at modernizing Greece's core infrastructure and boosting the country's development prospects. Top priorities include the Patras-Pyrgos motorway, the E65 highway, the BOAK Northern Road Axis[1] of Crete, and the Athens-Thessaloniki railway line.
The Thessaloniki flyover[2] and several major energy interconnections are also progressing on schedule. With completion of the projects, the government is aiming to improve connectivity across the country, support economic growth, energy security, and digital advancement.

A map of key infrastructure projects in Greece. The timeline for main projects:
- Patras-Pyrgos Motorway: scheduled completion by end of 2025
- E65 Motorway: scheduled completion by May 2026
- Thessaloniki flyover: scheduled completion by May 2027
- The Chania-Heraklion section of the Northern Road Axis (BOAK) on Crete: scheduled to start construction this year
- Athens-Thessaloniki Railway Axis (following Storm Daniel[3] repairs): scheduled completion by the summer of 2026
- Athens-Crete electrical interconnection[4]: scheduled for completion by the summer 2025
- Cyclades electrical interconnection: scheduled for completion in 2026.
Other priority projects in the pipeline include the electrical interconnections with the Dodecanese, the North Aegean islands; Crete-Cyprus-Israel; Greece-Italy; and Greece-Egypt, all of which are aimed at enhancing regional energy cooperation and sustainability.
In the digital sector, plans are advancing to expand fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks.
Initially lagging behind, Greece is now leading the way in fiber optics and related infrastructure.
