Freeport LNG Brings Final Storage Tank Back Online Following 2022 Fire

5/21/2025 (P&GJ) -- Freeport LNG has restored service to its third liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank, nearly three years after a fire damaged associated piping in June 2022.

The restart was approved by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, marking the final step in the facility's physical recovery process. "Today is a significant milestone for Freeport LNG as it marks the completion of the physical restoration of our facility after the June 8, 2022 incident," said Michael Smith, Freeport LNG's founder, chairman, and CEO. "Freeport LNG has emerged from this incident as a more resilient company, with an enhanced safety focus based largely on process safety management initiatives implemented across the organization."

Smith credited employees and contractors for their role in the recovery and emphasized that process safety and operational improvements will continue. Since the incident, Freeport LNG has expanded its operations and maintenance staff, filled several key leadership roles, and implemented broad process safety and reliability initiatives. The company also completed a debottlenecking project, boosting its production capacity.

Despite operating with only two tanks, Freeport LNG recorded its highest-ever LNG output in April 2025.
