Driver hospitalised after lorry overturns spilling 12 tonnes of asphalt

The man, who is in his 40s, was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital after this morning's (Thursday) crash. The A4440 remains partially closed after the 30 tonne lorry overturned while exiting the Whittington Roundabout at around 1.30am. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "At 1.32am this morning an ambulance crew came across an overturned lorry at the junction of Crookbarrow Way and the A4440 in Whittington, Worcester.
"Crews found a man, the lorry driver, who they treated for minor injuries before conveying him to Worcestershire Royal Hospital." Five firefighter crews were sent to the main road - two from Worcester and one each from Droitwich, Evesham and Hereford Fire Stations. A Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "A 30-tonne lorry had overturned with around 200l and 12 tonnes of asphalt spilled onto the roadway.
"A male casualty in his 40s was handed over to the care of the ambulance service who attended along with police. Whittington Roundabout was closed." The A4440 remained fully closed between Red Hill and Whittington Roundabout until approximately 8am this morning.
However, part of the road remains partially closed for possible resurfacing. A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a lorry overturning exiting onto the A44 southbound at the Whittington roundabout just after 1.30am this morning (Thursday). "The lorry was blocking the road.
"Fire and ambulance also attended. "The driver of the lorry was assessed at the scene by an ambulance crew. "It remains partially closed and is being assessed by Highways for possible resurfacing."
Pictures from the scene show a large groove in the middle of the roundabout where the lorry crashed.
