A crash between a lorry and a pedestrian left a woman seriously injured this evening, Tuesday, April 22.

The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge was closed[1] in order for the air ambulance to land safely.

Emergency services including the police and paramedics as well as the Air Ambulance Service attended the scene on the busy motorway bridge[2].

Gwent Police have now confirmed the crash involved a lorry and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian was taken to hospital where she remains. The extent of her injuries are unclear.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: "At around 6pm on Tuesday 22 April, we received a report of a road traffic collision heading west on the Prince of Wales Bridge between junctions 22 and 23.

"Officers attended along with paramedics and the Air Ambulance Service.

"The collision involved a pedestrian and a lorry. The pedestrian, a woman, was taken to hospital for treatment.

"The eastbound carriageway has now reopened to traffic, along with two lanes heading west.

Diversions are also in place via the M48 Severn Bridge."

The collision was initially reported just after 6.15pm, as traffic monitoring site, Inrix, posted: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationery traffic due to accident on M4 Prince of Wales Bridge in both directions, from J22 M49 to J23 M48.

"Prior to 18.20, all traffic held to assist with air ambulance."

The Severn Bridges account on X said: "The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge is closed in both directions following a serious incident.

"Avon and Somerset Police are responding.

Traffic being diverted via M48 Severn Crossing."

The Prince of Wales Bridge reopened just before 8.30pm, with all closures lifted, although residual traffic delays remained.
