Van driver drove ‘up to 100mph on wrong side of M60’ in police chase

At around 7.45pm, officers became aware of an automatic number plate recognition detection for a suspected cloned van in the Bury area, around junction 16 of the motorway, the Clifton Interchange. Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) tactical vehicle intercept unit responded and a chase began when the van driver reportedly failed to stop for officers. The pursuit saw the driver allegedly reaching speeds of up to 100mph, going the wrong way down the motorway, and "driving in a dangerous manner that put other road users at risk", police said.
The suspect eventually decamped the van around the Chatsworth Road area in Worsley, where he was soon detained at taser-point by attending officers. The work was supported by the National Police Air Service and GMP dog units, who assisted in locating and tracking. A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and a separate offence of arson.
He remains in custody for questioning. Detective Inspector Philip Whitehead said: "This brilliant arrest came on the back of a dangerous pursuit, which could have easily ended up causing serious personal or property[1] damage to others on the road. "Officers utilised the appropriate resources to ensure the incident was brought to a safe conclusion and saw a suspect detained.
