Stellantis presents solution for electric van conversion

The Stellantis Pro One unit, which specializes in business customers, is in charge of the offer. Stellantis and Qinomic have been working on such a conversion option since 2022[1] - now it is ready for the market. The new technology will initially be offered in France for medium-sized van models such as the Fiat Scudo, Opel Vivaro, Peugeot Expert and Citroen Jumpy.

The project was developed together with SUSTAINera, a Stellantis unit specializing in the circular economy.

The conversion option is intended to be a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to buying a new vehicle. Vehicle owners can bring their existing models up to the latest state of the art, protect the environment and extend the service life of their vehicles at the same time.

The conversion is based on a comprehensive replacement of over 200 original components. The removed parts - such as the engine, gearbox and exhaust system - are dismantled by Gruau, a coachbuilder specializing in commercial vehicles.

They are then returned to Stellantis and tested, reconditioned and reused at the SUSTAINera Circular Economy Hub in Mirafiori near Turin.

Qinomic obtains the new parts such as the battery and electric motor, which turn a diesel van into an electric van, directly from Stellantis. According to a report in the French car magazine L'Argus, the automotive group offers a warranty of eight years or 160,000 kilometres.

This means that all vehicles built from 2016 onwards of the four vehicle types mentioned above can be converted. The engine is 100 kW strong.

There is a choice of a battery with 50 kWh or 75 kWh for a range of 230 or 330 kilometres. With a DC charging capacity of 100 kW, the converted vehicles can be charged to 80 per cent in half an hour with the 50 kWh battery and in 45 minutes with the 75 kWh battery at fast charging stations.

Stellantis speaks of a 'win-win' solution for the environment and the economy. It combines high technical standards with the goal of reducing CO2 and at the same time supports the Stellantis strategy of decarbonization and promoting the circular economy.

In the end, while this is still less than the purchase price of a new electric van, the price remains quite high: the conversion of a diesel Jumpy to an electric Jumpy by Qinomic costs 33,000 euros plus VAT in France with the large 75 kWh battery and 25,000 euros plus VAT with the small 50 kWh battery.

In France, however, several subsidies can be combined for the conversion, so that the bottom line is that the conversion ideally only costs 10,000 euros (50 kWh battery) or 18,000 euros (75 kWh battery).

This is significantly less than buying a new e-Jumpy XL with a 75 kWh battery for 41,400 euros plus VAT (price in France).
