Manchester trains cancelled and delayed as lorry smashes into bridge

Trains heading to and from Manchester Piccadilly are being cancelled or delayed after a lorry hit a bridge in Stockport. TransPennine Express, Northern and Avanti West Coast services are all affected by the issue, between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport. Greater Manchester Police says a lorry struck the low bridge on Crossley Road, in Heaton Chapel, at around 10.15am today (April 10).

It's believed the vehicle hit the bridge but did not become stuck. Disruption is expected to continue into the afternoon, with trains running at a reduced speed. A spokesperson for TransPennine Express said: "Due to a road vehicle colliding with a bridge between Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly, trains have to run at reduced speed on all lines.

"Train services running to and from these stations may be delayed. Disruption is expected until 12:45 [April 10]." An update from Inrix added: "Delays of up to 20 minutes and some cancellations on Avanti West Coast, Northern and Transpennine Express between Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly due to road vehicle hitting a bridge at Heaton Chapel.

"Affecting East Midlands, Transport for Wales and Cross Country services also."
