Major rail disruption between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield

Transport for West Midlands[1] is warning rail passengers of major disruption to rail services between[2] Birmingham New Street and Lichfield Trent this morning. The disruption is due to an obstruction of the overhead wires between Birmingham New Street and Aston, which is two stops away.  The service will be out of action until approximately 10am as engineers work on repairing the lines.

Tickets are being accepted on National Express West Midlands[3] bus services during the disruption. Replacement bus services are running between Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield City as well as between Lichfield City and Lichfield Trent Valley. All passengers are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.

The latest update from West Midlands Railway was posted at 8.44am.  A spokesperson for West Midlands Railway issued an apology to customers who are affected by the disruption. They said: "Due to an object being caught in the overhead wires, services are currently unable to run between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield Trent Valley.

Rail replacement transport will be in operation until the issue is resolved. "We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused. Any passengers delayed by 15 minutes or more as a result of the disruption are entitled to compensation against the cost of their ticket under the Delay Repay scheme."

The Cross City North remains suspended with services to and from diverted - and not calling at Perry Barr to Duddeston.

We will bring you further updates as soon as we receive them.
