Commuters are being warned to expect disruption as a major Greater Manchester road is closed.
Roadworks have overrun on Kearsley Spur from the M61 northbound to the A666 near Bolton[1] this morning (April 3).
Article continues belowThe incident is affecting drivers heading from the M60[2] towards Bolton and Lancashire.
A diversion is in place, but National Highways is warning motorists to expect delays, with the roadworks set to continue during rush hour.
Drivers are currently facing congestion in both directions of the M60 approaching junction 15 for the Kearsley Spur, according to Google data.
There are also queues in both directions on the M61 and A666, with the roadworks appearing to have an impact on the usual rush hour traffic.
A National Highways north west spokesperson wrote on X: "The M61 northbound between J2 and J3 for the A666 remains closed due to planned overnight roadworks which have overrun their pre-agreed end time.
"It is expected that the road will remain closed until after the morning rush hour. A signed diversion route is in place."
An update from the Inrix traffic monitoring system added: "M61 Northbound exit slip road closed, long delays due to overrunning roadworks at J3 (Kearsley Spur).
"Closed heading onto the A666(M), was scheduled to be open at 5am."
