M6 traffic diversion route as ‘serious’ crash leaves motorway closed in Merseyside

The northbound carriageway is expected to remain closed into the early hours of Tuesday

A traffic diversion route is in place after a crash left the M6 shut in Merseyside tonight (Monday, April 28).
The northbound carriageway is closed between Junction 22 and Junction 23.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "The M6 in Merseyside is closed northbound between J22 (Winwick) & J23 (Haydock Island) due to a serious road traffic collision.
"Emergency services are in attendance and are being assisted by National Highways Traffic Officers.
Article continues below"The closure is expected to remain in place for several hours for collision investigation, recovery and clear-up work."
M6 diversion route tonight:
National Highways has the following diversion route in place.
Motorists are advised to follow the Solid Square diversion symbols on local road signs.
Article continues belowExit the M6 at J22. At the A579A572 junction turn right onto the A572 northbound.
At the A572/B5207 junction turn left onto the B5207 northbound.
At the B5207/A580 junction turn right onto the A580 westbound.
At the A580/M6 junction turn left onto the Gyratory and take the 4th exit to re-join the M6.
