Live M53 updates as serious crash closes motorway

A 31-year-old man has died following a serious crash on the M53[1] this afternoon. The motorway has been shut by Merseyside Police following a crash near to J2 for Moreton Spur in Wirral. Merseyside Police[2] were called to the scene to reports of a serious crash at around 3.30pm on Sunday (April 6).
A 31-year-old motorcyclist died after suffering significant injuries. Police[3] believe the motorcyclist suffered the injuries after falling from his bike on the slip road at Junction 2. National Highways initially said in a statement on X that the crash involved multiple vehicles. However, Merseyside Police has now confirmed no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
The motorway remains closed this evening while Merseyside Police[4] carry out investigation work. It's currently unclear when the motorway will be reopened. This is an ongoing incident and you can follow the latest updates below.
