‘It’s happened again’: Road remains shut after lorry hits railway bridge
A lorry has collided with a railway bridge in a notorious crash hotspot. Bryant Road in Strood remains blocked two days on from the incident which happened shortly before 9pm on Sunday (March 30).
The back of the large van was ripped off in the crash and remains in the road. No vehicles can get through due to it being taped off near the Kwik Fit garage.
Florist Jean Reynolds, who has worked at Pick-a-Posy, right next to bridge for 10 years, says crashes there are a common occurrence. "It happens a few times a month," the shop owner explained. "It's not too bad for business as there's plenty of other routes, but it causes some disruption.
It's always happening."
Police confirmed their attendance to a report that a large van was causing an obstruction after it had collided with a railway bridge. Officers attended the scene where no injuries were reported.
The railway bridge has been the site of several crashes over the years, including in July 2021 when a white lorry was badly damaged as the driver took it under the bridge[1] near the junction with Gun Lane. A year later, the same road was blocked[2] after a "loud bang and crashing noise" was heard.
Just months later another driver fell victim to the railway bridge[3].
Medway Council has been approached for comment on when the remainder of the large van will be cleared.
