The couple's son has now appealed for any witnesses or anyone with footage of the crash that may help officers, to contact police.
The woman had just landed at Manchester Airport[3] after visiting a friend in Malta and her husband had driven from their home in Kirkham, Lancashire, to pick her up.
They were on their way back when they were involved in the smash at around 2am.
It took place between junctions 22 near Newton-le-Willows and 23 at the East Lancs Road.
The couple's son said that after the collision with the lorry, his parent's white Jaguar struck the central reservation before being struck by a second vehicle.
Police, firefighters and paramedics all descended on the motorway
They both had to be cut free from the car before being taken to hospital. Their son said his mum has multiple broken ribs, open fractures to her wrist and ankle and a closed fracture of her other foot and has needed surgery.
His dad also suffered broken ribs, a broken sternum and broken vertebrae in his back, he said.
He said: "It's just been a massive shock for everyone. My dad is just worried about my mum as she has been in for surgery.
She's the one we're all concerned about."
Officers from Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside police forces all attended the scene.
According to Cheshire Police, an initial crash involved a lorry and a car.
The car was then involved in a collision with a second vehicle.
Highways officers fully closed the motorway in both directions for more than an hour following the crash.
