Busy London tunnel closes after lorry crash leaving backlog of traffic

A crash involving a lorry closed a major tunnel in Central London this afternoon (April 9). The Strand Underpass, which connects Waterloo Bridge to Kingsway, in Holborn, was shut around 10.35am. The crash happened on the one-way road some time before this however it is not yet clear what happened.
The Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service have been contacted for more information. The tunnel reopened almost four hours later, with traffic easing soon after. Cars were almost at a standstill on the A301 before this, according to road trackers Inrix and AA News.
No bus routes were affected as the tunnel is only open to cars and pedestrians.
