999 crews called to two late night crashes which closed A1

Emergency services rushed to the scene in a double response that brought parts of the motorway to a standstill. The first collision happened just before 10.10pm on the southbound carriageway, shortly before the A690 junction near Carrville. Two vehicles were involved in the crash, prompting police to shut the road while emergency teams worked to clear the scene.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Under two hours later, chaos struck again- this time on the northbound side. At around 11.55pm, three vehicles were involved in a second crash near the same stretch of road.

Again, despite the blockage of the carriageway, no one was injured. All vehicles were recovered, and the road has since fully reopened. The stretch of motorway between junctions 62 and 63, connecting Carrville and Chester-le-Street, saw a significant emergency response that included police units and multiple ambulance crews.

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that they attended both incidents. A spokesperson said: "We were called at 22.07 last night (10 APR) to two separate road traffic collisions on the A1 between junctions 62 and 63 in County Durham. "The first incident involved two vehicles on the southbound carriageway.

The second incident involved two vehicles on the northbound carriageway. "We dispatched two Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) crews, one paramedic ambulance crew and a duty officers. The occupants of all four vehicles were assessed and discharged on scene."

A Durham Police spokesperson added: "The first happened shortly before 10.10pm on the southbound carriageway, just before the A690 junction and involved two vehicles. "The road was closed while emergency services worked at the scene, but thankfully nobody is believed to have been injured. "The second happened at around 11.55pm on the northbound carriageway and involved three vehicles.

"Again, nobody was injured but the road was blocked for a short time while the vehicles were recovered."
