A road near Wigan[1] has been closed for more than 10 hours[2] after a lorry hit a bridge and overturned.

Officers were called out to the A573 Golborne Dale Road, in Newton-le-Willows, at 11.25pm on Tuesday (March 26) following a crash at the bridge near to Warrington Road, in Golborne.

Images from the scene showed the lorry remaining on its side on the road this morning (Wednesday).

Police have taped off a section of the road either side of the bridge while investigation work takes place and the scene is cleared.

A Merseyside[3] Police spokesperson said: "We were contacted at 11.25pm last night, Tuesday March 25, following reports an HGV had struck a bridge on Golborne Dale Road in Newton-le-Willows and overturned.

"Work is ongoing to recover the vehicle and road closures remain in place."

The incident has been affecting traffic near to the A580 East Lancs Road.

An update from the Inrix traffic monitoring system said: "A573 Warrington Road in both directions closed due to overturned lorry and recovery work from A580 East Lancashire Road (Golborne Island, Golborne) to A572 Newton[4] Road (Golborne Dale).

"A lorry has hit the railway bridge and overturned. Ongoing since around midnight."
