Police warning over bad driving in North Staffordshire after latest sting

Police have issued a warning to law-breaking drivers after the latest crackdown in North Staffordshire. It comes as the force continues to tackle issues on major routes through the county such as the M6 and the A500. Now officers with the force's road harm prevention team have urged motorists not to fall foul of the law for basic things like not wearing a seatbelt.

It comes after a recent crackdown around the M6. In a three-hour period cops made 'a number of stops' which included the driver of a low loader, a 42-year-old man, of Manchester, being arrested for 'immigration offences' after being pulled over near Junction 16. The stop was made as officers suspected the vehicle had no insurance.

A van driver was 'given advice' and issued with a fine when officers spotted she wasn't wearing a seatbelt while travelling on the M6 just south of Stafford. It comes after cops with the road crime team had carried out a sting on middle-lane hoggers and tailgating drivers which saw 185 stopped across the M6 and A500.

The force has also started to head out in an unmarked HGV during the night-time on the M6 in an effort to spot offences - such as drivers using a mobile phone. That comes after traditionally that vehicle had been used during the day around the motorway, D-road and A50.

PC Daniel Sambrook, of the road harm prevention team, says cops will continue 'proactively policing' the network. Speaking after the latest sting, he said: "Wearing a seatbelt not only helps to protect you, it helps to protect others and you can be fined up to GBP500 for not wearing one, whilst overloading is also a common issue that has an impact on how a vehicle handles and brakes. "Officers will continue to proactively police our road networks, working every day to ensure motorists using them are safe and those putting themselves and others at risk are dealt with appropriately."
