Lorry driver dies after HGV collides with bridge and crashes into river
A lorry driver has died after the HGV he was driving collided with a bridge and crashed into a river in North Yorkshire.
It happened on the A684 in the village of Bainbridge in Wensleydale just after 6am on Friday (21 March).
Police have confirmed that the 30-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, despite the efforts of paramedics and members of the public who came to his aid.
ITV News Tyne Tees has spoken to one of the people who tried to help.
Matt Dinsdale said: "One of the lads from next door came and got me, and we went down to see what we could see. There was no movement, we climbed on the top and looked in but he wasn't responding to us. The ambulance was on its way so as soon as it came we came away."
The bridge over the River Bain was damaged in the collision, and remained closed on Friday afternoon.
Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to get in touch with them.
They are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who was driving along the A684 and saw a blue Volvo tipper HGV travelling from Masham, then along the A684 towards Bainbridge.
