Driver dies after collision involving VW Golf and lorry on M1

A man has died following a collision involving a VW Golf and a lorry on the M1 this morning (March 16). Leicestershire Police[1] and East Midlands Ambulance Service[2] were called to the road, close to J22 at Markfield[3], at 4.40am this morning. The collision on the southbound carriageway involved a a white VW Golf and a Leyland DAF HGV.

The driver of the Golf was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the HGV was not injured but he was taken to hospital as a precaution. He has since been discharged.

No arrests have been made. Both carriageways were immediately closed, with the northbound carriageway opening at around 10am[4]. The southbound carriageway remains closed this afternoon, some 12 hours on.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "Detectives have begun an investigation into the collision and are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the circumstances leading up to it.

"Any drivers who may have captured footage on their dashcams which may relate to this incident are also asked to contact us.

"If you have any information which may assist our investigation, please contact us on 101 quoting incident 88 of 16 March."
