Car involved in fatal M1 lorry crash was in another collision before

A car which was involved in a fatal crash with a lorry on the M1 was involved in a separate collision prior to the tragedy. The driver of the car, which was a white Volkswagen Golf, was pronounced dead[1] at the scene of the crash. The collision was reported at 4.40am on Sunday, March 16[2], on the southbound carriageway near junction 22 at Markfield.

Inquiries carried out so far by Leicestershire Police[3] have revealed the Golf had been involved in a separate crash prior to the fatal collision. The vehicle had stopped stationary in lane one of the carriageway when it was struck by the Leyland DAF HGV, police said. The driver of the HGV did not sustain any physical injuries but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

He has since been discharged. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident. A statement from Leicestershire Police reads: "We are therefore keen to speak to anyone who may have driven past and seen the Golf in this position before the collision involving the HGV.

Any drivers who may have captured footage on their dashcams which may relate to this incident are also asked to contact us.
