Tees Valley Students Explore Opportunities at Teesworks

A group of Tees Valley learners got the chance to tour the giant Teesworks development, gaining valuable insight into the diverse and promising job opportunities available there. The students, participants in the Teesside Clean Energy Technician scholarship programme, are undertaking a two-year course developed by Redcar and Cleveland College in collaboration with bp. This programme allows them to earn while they learn and gives school leavers the training and inspiration to access future quality jobs in renewable and low carbon industries.
Delivered at the College, the scholarship programme provides hands-on experience including use of cutting-edge technologies in its Clean Energy Education Hub and introduces learners to a range of sectors including clean energy. With the first cohort coming to the end of their two-year programme, the Teesworks Skills Academy collaborated with Redcar and Cleveland College to setup an opportunities day - exploring the potential job opportunities on the Teesworks site and highlighting upcoming apprenticeship opportunities that could help them build their future career pathway. The students, aged 16-18, are now exploring a diverse range of options including employment opportunities, apprenticeships, T Level courses or pathways into Higher Education.
Neil Young, Teesside Freeport Skills & Workforce Development Manager, said: "It was inspiring to meet the Teesside Clean Energy Technician scholars and showcase the exciting transformation underway at Teesworks. "We delved into the site's history, explored ongoing construction and operations, and highlighted key job opportunities in areas like offshore wind, project engineering, and more. "It's crucial to inspire young people about the career possibilities right here in the Tees Valley, and Teesworks is proud to play a role in creating a thriving future for the region."
Ebony Roberts, one of the Teesside Clean Energy Technician scholars, said: "The course has been fantastic. I've built up a lot of skills and gained valuable hands-on experience in both my first year where we covered mechanical engineering and this year where we focused on electrical engineering. "I knew there was going to be a lot of construction already underway at Teesworks but I'm surprised by the vast amount of work that has already been done and is ongoing."
Aidan Ramzan, 17, from Ingleby Barwick, said: "I was thinking about going onto university or continuing in education but when I came onto site and saw all the construction and preparation work that has already been done, it pushes me towards getting an apprenticeship with one of the local companies that will be here as I think that will be the perfect transition from my scholarship. "The course has been the perfect balance between being in the classroom learning theory alongside gaining practical skills in the workshop. The experience we've gained is great as it's easily transferrable to the workplace and you'll already be used to doing what you're working on day to day."
Teesworks Limited Chairman Chris Musgrave said: "Teesworks is an investment in the future of our region. "It's not just about the jobs on site which are currently operational, but we're putting the building blocks in place for future generations and future-proofing skills in green industries." Teesworks is expected to create 20,000 jobs during construction, operation and in the supply chain.
