Major M5 lorry crash closed motorway for over six hours

A stretch of the M5 in Somerset was closed after a serious crash this afternoon (Wednesday, February 26). There were huge delays on both the northbound and southbound carriageways for much of the afternoon and into the evening following the collision which involved a pedestrian, a lorry and a car. The crash took place between junction 24 for Bridgwater and junction 25 for Taunton.

It was first reported shortly after 3pm. The northbound carriageway was closed for around three hours. The southbound carriageway did not reopen until around 9.30pm.

Inrix said: "M5 southbound closed, severe delays due to recovery work, emergency repairs and earlier accident from J24 A38 Taunton Road (Bridgwater South) to J25 A358 (Taunton). Congestion to before J23 (Bridgwater North) and its solid along the A38 between Taunton and Bridgwater as traffic heads away." By 10pm, traffic was easing.
