Major A20 delays after lorry crashes into railway bridge

Delays built along a busy route in Harrietsham near Maidstone this afternoon (Monday, February 17) following a crash involving a lorry. The incident took place on the A20[1] Ashford Road near the junction with Church Road. Kent County Council's[2] Highways department reported that the lorry, which was travelling eastbound, had collided with the railway bridge that passes over the road.

Motorists were advised at the time to 'approach with caution' as the route had been partially blocked. Traffic cameras in the area showed congestion building on the approach. An early update from traffic and travel monitoring service Inrix stated: "A20 Ashford Road Eastbound partially blocked due to overturned lorry near The Railway Bridge."

A police spokesperson said: "Kent Police was called at 11.42am to a report that a lorry had collided with a bridge on the A20, Ashford Road in Harrietsham near Maidstone. Officers attended to assist with recovering the vehicle. There were no reported injuries."
