Magna produces electric motors for electric G-Class

The G-Class itself is built at Magna's facility in Graz. The combustion engine versions have been rolling off the production line there since 1979 - and the electric one since 2024. The latter is called 'G 580 with EQ technology.' It also uses the ladder-frame design with the independent front suspension and rigid rear axle of the combustion engine - but with some electric-specific features, such as the four electric motors close to the wheels.

As has now been revealed, these drive units also come from Magna. "In 2024, Magna began production of the eDS Duo, a unique eDrive system with exceptional traction properties, at its Lannach, Austria facility, marking a new chapter in the partnership.

The all-new electric model of the iconic off-roader is now equipped with this advanced electric drive system for leading performance and efficiency," the supplier writes in the latest press release.

Each eDS Duo has an output of 108 kW. In total, the four drive units generate 432 kW and 1,164 Nm of torque. The unique feature of the one-motor-per-wheel design is that power and torque can be controlled more precisely.

The 'Duo' in the name stands for a mechanical 'low range' gear that can be activated as an off-road reduction at the touch of a button.

The eDS Duo thus combines an electric drive system (eDS) with a mechanical two-speed gearbox. You can find out how this works in our driving report of the G580 with EQ technology.[1]

In fact, even more would be possible, as Magna mentions a power range of up to 240 kW in the press release.

The drive should also offer "leading traction and off-road capabilities." Silicon carbide semiconductors are installed in the power electronics and there is also a decoupler.

Both are intended to increase efficiency without affecting performance.

"Having supplied three generations of transfer cases for Mercedes-Benz's iconic off-roader, Magna is honoured to now equip this legendary vehicle with its first generation of electric units," said Diba Ilunga, President of Magna Powertrain. "The eDS Duo demonstrates Magna's flexible approach to delivering powertrain solutions, transitioning seamlessly from internal combustion engines to battery electric vehicles."
