M6 smash live as motorway reopens after hours-long crash investigation work

Drivers have been warned to 'avoid the area' around the M6 after a serious crash today. Motorists were told to expect 'major disruption' on the motorway as it was closed in both directions. The carriageway has been blocked both ways between J10A and J11 A460 Cannock.

Vehicles are being diverted and trapped traffic is being "turned around" this afternoon, Saturday, February 1. Heavy traffic has also been reported due to the serious collision. It is not yet known what happened.

BirminghamLive has approached the emergency services for comment. Inrix, which provides travel and traffic updates, said: "M6 in both directions closed, heavy traffic due to serious accident between J10A and J11 A460 (Cannock). Congestion to Northbound J10 (Wolverhampton/Walsall) and along the A460 through Shareshill.

The A462 Warstone Road towards Springhill is also affected as drivers divert. Routes through Standeford and Gailey are also affected. Northbound trapped traffic is now being turned around.

This is a live blog, we will be updating it as we get more information.
