M1 live updates as long delays due to ‘police incident’ between junction 21 and 22

The M1 motorway was closed in both directions earlier this afternoon (Thursday, February 20) as Leicestershire Police dealt with an "incident". Motorists faced long queues after they were urged to avoid the area between junction 21 and 22 if possible. In a post on X at about 3pm today, the force said: "M1 northbound just after J21 - please be aware the northbound carriageway is currently in the process of being closed due to an incident.

There will be a traffic build up. Please use alternative routes." By 3.15pm the queues already stretched back south beyond the Enderby area and the southbound was also very busy on the approach to the service station, Leicestershire Live reports.[1]

Leicestershire Police has confirmed that the incident involved a man on a gantry above the motorway, who was eventually persuaded to get down.

The NHS Choices website[2] lists the following helplines and support networks for people to talk to.

  • Samaritans[3] (116 123) operates a 24-hour service available every day of the year. If you prefer to write down how you're feeling, or if you're worried about being overheard on the phone, you can email Samaritans at [email protected][4].
  • Childline[5] (0800 1111) runs a helpline for children and young people in the UK. Calls are free and the number won't show up on your phone bill.
  • PAPYRUS[6] (0800 068 41 41) is an organisation supporting teenagers and young adults who are feeling suicidal.
  • Mind[7] (0300 123 3393) is a charity based in England providing advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem.

They campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.

  • Students Against Depression[8] is a website for students who are depressed, have a low mood or are having suicidal thoughts.
  • Bullying UK[9] is a website for both children and adults affected by bullying.

The police statement said: "The M1 was shut in both directions at Leicester Forest East for around 30 minutes this afternoon following a report of a man on a gantry over the carriageway. "He came down of his own accord and is with officers. The roads re-opened at 3.45pm."
