M1 crash causes miles of queues

There were queues on the M1[1] and the M69 this morning after a crash blocked traffic trying to join the motorway. The four-vehicle collision happened on the slip-road onto the northbound M1 at junction 21 near Fosse Park[2] and shut both the slip-road and one lane of the motorway. By 8am there was a three-mile queue[3] on the northbound M1, a four-mile queue on the city-bound M69 and about seven miles of slow-moving traffic on the southbound M1.
National Highways said in a post on X at 7.50am today (Tuesday, February 11): "Traffic is stopped on the M1 northbound within J21 entry slip road due to a collision. "There is also a lane 1 closure on the main carriageway. Emergency services and Traffic Officers on scene.
There are delays of 45 min on the M69 northbound on approach to the M1."
