A14 closed to traffic after ‘serious’ crash in Northamptonshire tonight involving car and lorry

A major A-road in the East Midlands is closed tonight (Wednesday, February 19) following a 'serious' crash. The A14 is shut to traffic in both directions between Junction 1 for Welford and Cathorpe Interchange in Northamptonshire. The closure was first reported shortly before 10pm on Wednesday and is expected to remain in place into Thursday morning (February 20).

The crash involves a car and a lorry and all emergency services remain at the scene and traffic diversion routes are in place. National Highways first confirmed the closure at around 9.55pm. A spokesperson added: "The A14 is closed in both directions following a serious collision between a lorry and a van.

Northamptonshire Police will be carrying out a full investigation throughout the night. National Highways traffic officers are assisting with traffic management." ADVERTISEMENT

It is likely to be closed for some time and drivers are advised to find an alternative route." Inrix, the traffic data company, said: "A14 in both directions closed due to accident from J1 A5199 (Welford) to M1 J19 (Catthorpe Interchange). Originally just closed westbound, now closed in both directions."

A14 diversion routes:

Westbound traffic is advised to follow the Hollow Diamond: Exit the A14 westbound at Junction 1.

At the top of the slip road turn left (north) onto the A5199 Northampton Road and continue for approx 2.8km to Welford. ADVERTISEMENT Then proceed through and out of Welford along the A5199 for a further 2.8 km to A5199/A4304 Welford Road/High Street junction in Husbands Bosworth.

At the junction turn left (west) onto the A4304 Kilworth Road out of Husband Bosworth and continue along the A4304 Station Road/Lutterworth Road for approx.

9.5 km passing through North Kilworth, Walcote and Misterton villages to M1 Junction 20. Then rejoin the M1. M6 eastbound and M1 southbound traffic follow these diversions: Traffic from M6 South/eastbound instead of exiting the M6 south/eastbound at M1 Junction 19 Catthorpe.

Keep in the LHS lane and exit the M6 using the left hand side free flow lanes(M6-M1 Link) that crosses over the M1 at Junction 19 and merges into the M1 southbound a distance of approximately 4kms. Continue along the M1 southbound as described above. Traffic from M1 Southbound instead of exiting the M1 at M1 Junction 19 Catthorpe continue southbound along the M1 passing M1 Junctions 18, 17, 16, 15a to Junction 15 a distance approximately of 33 kilometres.

At M1 J15 take the A45 north/eastbound to A45/A14 Junction 13 Thrapston Interchange a distance approximately of 39kms.
