M56 in Cheshire shut near Manchester Airport due to flooding
THE M56 in Cheshire is closed westbound between J6 (Manchester Airport) and J7 (Bowdon) due flooding which has covered all lanes of the carriageway. National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene. Contractors have been working throughout the morning to clear the flooding but this is expected to take some time due to the volume of water.
National Highways North-West said at 11.46am: "We have no estimated time for re-opening at this stage." Diversion Route Road users[1] are advised to follow the hollow square diversion symbol on road signs. Exit the M56[2] westbound at J6 and join the A538 northbound.
At the A5144 junction, turn right onto the A5144 northbound and continue onward until the A560 junction. Turn left onto the A560 westbound and continue onward until the A56 junction. Turn left onto the A56 southbound and continue onward to the A56/M56 J7 spur road Join the A556 southbound and continue southbound to then re-join the M56 westbound at J8.
A spokesman for National Highways[3] said: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. "Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey. "Further information is available from National Highways by visiting www.trafficengland.com website and travel apps, or via our regional X feed.
"The 24/7 contact centre team is also available to provide up to the minute information on 0300 123 5000[4]."
