M4: Middle lane hogger caught driving while disqualified

Wiltshire Police's Roads Policing Unit (RPU) officers pulled over a grey Volkswagen between Junctions 15 and 16 of the M4 at around 11pm on Monday, January 6. Checks revealed the driver was disqualified from driving, so they seized the vehicle and reported the motorist to court. Driving in the middle lane of the motorway when there is no need to do so is against the law.

Last year, National Highways launched a campaign urging drivers to cut out bad habits like middle lane hogging. Rule 264 of the Highway Code warns motorists to stay in the left-hand lane on the motorway unless overtaking. A National Highways spokesperson added: "Driving in a middle lane is considered poor driving behaviour and is illegal.

"The middle lanes are for overtaking or providing more space for those who've stopped on the hard shoulder. "It's essential to follow the Highway Code. "Staying in a middle lane disrupts traffic flow and can be dangerous, causing congestion and increasing the risk of a collision."
