Hyster eECH for Malta Freeport Terminals ‣ WorldCargo News
Hyster will supply Malta Freeport Terminals with an eight-high battery electric empty container handler powered by 650-volt lithium-ion batteries. Hyster has announced it will supply Malta Freeport Terminals with an eight-high battery electric empty container handler (eECH), powered entirely by 650-volt lithium-ion batteries. Malta Freeport Terminals is operated by CMA CGM.
The French shipping company has established "PULSE, CMA CGM Energy Fund," designed to accelerate decarbonisation across its shipping, inland, and logistics operations. PULSE will fund a two-year pilot agreement for the Hyster battery-powered eECH, contributing to the CMA CGM Group's and its subsidiary Terminal Link's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions specifically at Malta Freeport. Niek Willems, Leader of Business Development, Global Ports and Terminals for Hyster, commented: "We have a long-standing relationship with CMA CGM, a global Hyster customer for over a decade, and a user of Hyster empty container handlers at Malta Freeport Terminals since 2016.
Our recent collaboration on the iTerminals 4.0 project, exploring smart maintenance through digitalisation, sets the stage for this next exciting development--pioneering the use of a lithium-ion battery-powered empty container handler." The design of the battery electric eECH for Malta Freeport Terminals is based on the equivalent diesel model. In 2023 Hyster supplied an electric empty container handler to the leasing company and depot operator CARU B.V. in Rotterdam[1]. This machine was also an 8-high design with a 650-volt lithium-ion battery, based on Hyster's H10XD-ECD8 double-container handler.
