Pensioners seriously hurt in four-vehicle crash near Marlborough

Two pensioners have been seriously hurt in a four-vehicle crash near Marlborough. Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision on the A346 through Savernake Forest at around 1pm this afternoon (Tuesday). The incident involved a lorry, three cars and a van at the turning for Browns Farm - with Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance landing at the scene.

A man and woman travelling together in one of the vehicles, both aged in their 70s, sustained serious and potentially life-changing injuries. A man, the driver another vehicle, sustained a broken thumb.

All three people were taken to hospital for treatment. It's understood a lorry had slowed or stopped in order to take a right turn into Browns Farm, with two vehicles stopping behind it. A third vehicle is believed to have struck the back of the queue, and subsequently, one vehicle has impacted an oncoming car.

However, a full-scale forensic collision investigation is underway to establish exactly who was at fault and how the smash came to occur. The road is closed in both directions between Marlborough and Cadley, and isn't expected to reopened until gone midnight.
