Police are appealing for dashcam footage after a crash between a lorry and a van on the A50[1] left one man in hospital. Emergency services closed the A50 in both directions following the collision near Creswell last night (December 11). The smash shortly after 7pm involved a white Citroen Berlingo van and a Mercedes articulated lorry.

The driver of the Citroen - a man in his 60s - was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital[2] with a serious head injury. Th A50 remained closed for several hours while an investigation got underway. The trucker is helping police with their inquiries.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "We are appealing for witnesses after a serious collision on the A50 eastbound near to Blythe Bridge just before the Creswell Road overbridge. We were called at 7.05pm last night to reports of a serious collision involving a white Citroen Berlingo van and a Mercedes articulated lorry. "The driver of the Citroen was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital with a serious head injury.

There were no passengers involved. The driver of the lorry was not injured and is assisting police with the investigation. "We are keen to speak to anyone travelling on either carriageway with any CCTV or dashcam footage or those with any information which could help collision investigators."

Two ambulances were among the resources sent to the scene. And two heroic off-duty nurses were also on the scene supporting the casualty. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "When ambulance staff arrived on the scene they found a HGV which had collided with a van.

A man, who was out of the van, was assessed and found with serious injuries. The team of ambulance staff worked quickly together to provide advanced trauma care at the scene to stabilise his condition before being conveyed on blue lights to the Royal Stoke University Hospital for further emergency care."

During the height of the incident police urged motorists to avoid the A50 as they dealt with what officers described as a 'serious collision'. The road, which had been shut between Blythe Bridge and Uttoxeter, reopened at around 2am this morning.
