Storm Darragh live as man dies after car is hit by tree in Birmingham

A man has sadly died after his car was hit by a falling tree in Erdington. The motorist was travelling along Silver Birch Road close to the junction of Sutton New Road, when he was fatally struck by the uprooted tree around 3pm. He becomes the second victim of Storm Darragh which has caused carnage across the United Kingdom since the early hours of Saturday.

A man in his 40s, was killed when a tree hit his Citroen van on the A59 in Longton, near Lancashire Police's headquarters, around 9am. A van has also been hit by a tree near Birmingham airport on the M42 motorway, leading to the closure of three out of four lanes this evening. Trees have come down on roads across the city, streets have been flooded and Christmas markets have been cancelled due to the stormy weather after the Met Office issued a Yellow wind alert for the region.

Large parts of England, including the Midlands, South East and North West, have been given a Yellow wind warning today (December 7). But other parts of the country face heightened alerts. The South West of England and most of Wales faces an Amber wind warning however parts of Wales on the west and south coast face a rare Red wind warning.

Wales also faces Yellow and Amber rain warnings. In the West Midlands, residents have been warned there is a "small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris". The Yellow wind warning will remain in place until 6am tomorrow (December 8).

Warnings issued by the Met Office under the Yellow weather alert include, a slight chance of damage to buildings, including tiles being blown from roofs and 'roads and bridges could likely close due to the impact of falling trees'
