Road closed both ways after man fatally hit by lorry

A busy Nottinghamshire road was closed for several hours as police investigated the death of an elderly man who was hit by a lorry. The 81-year-old pedestrian died from his injuries after a crash on North Road in Retford[1] shortly before 9.30am on Wednesday, December 4. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Nottinghamshire Police[2] said.

The road[3] was closed in both directions until around 4pm, as officers examined the crash scene between Leafield and Fulford Avenue to determine what happened. Sergeant Mark Baker, of Nottinghamshire Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This was a tragic and upsetting incident for everyone involved and we are currently working to understand what happened. Our thoughts today are with the victim's family who will be supported in the days ahead by specially trained officers."

Any additional witnesses who have yet to come forward are asked to do so by calling 101 and quoting incident 140 of December 4." The A638 is the main road out of Retford towards the A1 leading north.
