Person in hospital after lorry crashes off busy motorway onto railway line

A PERSON has been rushed to hospital after a lorry crashed off a major Scottish motorway and onto a busy railway line. Emergency crews raced to the scene at around 8am this morning following the incident on the M74 near Gretna. Shocking photos from the scene show the HGV blocking the train tracks.

It's understood that the vehicle has gone down the embankment off the motorway. One person was rushed to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. The crash has caused travel chaos this morning, with the railway line between Dumfries[1] and Carlisle closed and a number of train services cancelled for the rest of the day.

Services between Glasgow[2] Central and Carlisle via Dumfries have also been axed.

Customers have been advised they can travel on Avanti West Coast and Transpenine Express services between Glasgow, Lockerbie and Carlisle until further notice. A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 07:59 to attend an incident near Junction 22, on the M74, Gretna. "We dispatched one ambulance and one paramedic response unit (PRU) to the scene.

"One patient was transported to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary." National Rail revealed on their website that disruption is expected to last until the end of the day.

It read: "Reports of an obstruction on the line between Dumfries and Carlisle means that all lines are blocked. Trains running between these stations will be cancelled.

"All stations between Dumfries and Carlisle will not be served. "Disruption is expected until the end of the day." ScotRail[3] also wrote on X: "Due to checking reports of an obstruction on the line between Dumfries and Carlisle all lines are closed.

"Train services between Dumfries and Carlisle may be cancelled, delayed or revised.

"Train services between Glasgow Central and Carlisle via Dumfries may be cancelled, delayed or revised."
