Multi-Car Crash Snarls Traffic on Maine’s I295 in Freeport on Monday Morning

Maine State Police reported that a two-vehicle crash happened on part of Maine's Interstate 295 in the southbound lanes on Monday morning. Shannon Moss, Maine Public Safety Spokeswoman, said that the crash happened near mile marker 22 at about 7:25 a.m., prompting a quick response from local rescue crews and Troopers with the Maine State Police. Moss went on to explain in the press release that the two-car accident occurred on I-295 southbound near Freeport, Maine, when a 2024 Toyota collided with a 2018 Volkswagen while it was in the process of changing lanes.

Moss said that following the collision of the two vehicles the Volkswagen hit a guardrail, and the Toyota overturned, ending up on its roof after coming to a rest following the crash.

As far as injuries sustained in the Monday morning crash, Moss explained that the Toyota driver was taken to Maine Medical Center with what are considered to be not life-threatening injuries. Moss said that the Volkswagen driver declined transport though it was offered to them by emergency crews on the scene. The crash did briefly stop Monday morning traffic in the vicinity of 295 in Freeport, but Moss says it was well-managed with assistance from local authorities and responders.

As traffic on Maine's highways ramps up headed into what is being considered one of the busiest travel months in recent history, drivers are urged to take extra caution when heading out this holiday season. Additionally, drivers should pay attention as cold mornings will start leading to patchy spots of black ice along Maine roadways.
