M6 diversion route after Christmas night crash leaves road shut to traffic in Cumbria

The M6 motorway is closed in Cumbria following a crash on Christmas[1] Day (December 25) - with a diversion route now in place. The southbound carriageway is shut to traffic between Junction 42 and Junction 41. The closure was first reported at around 11.35pm on Christmas night and remains in place in the early hours of Boxing Day.

The M.E.N. is providing live updates on our dedicated feed here.[2] A National Highways spokesperson said: "The M6 southbound in Cumbria is closed between J42 (Carleton) and J41 (Hutton-in-the-Forest) due to a serious collision. Emergency services including Cumbria Police are in attendance.

National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene to assist with traffic management."

M6 diversion route:

National Highways has put the following diversion route in place. Motorists are advised to follow the solid square symbol on road signs. Exit the M6 southbound at J42 and at the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A6.

Follow the A6 through Low/High Hesket and Plumpton to the Stoneybeck roundabout with the B5305.

At the roundabout take the 4th exit onto the B5305.

Continue on the B5305 back to the M6 J41 and at the roundabout take the 1st exit to rejoin the M6 southbound to continue your journey.
