LIVE updates as traffic stopped on M66 and drivers face queues on THREE motorways

Drivers are facing delays on three Greater Manchester motorways following an incident at one of the region's busiest traffic hotspots. Queues are building on the M60[1], M62[2] and M66 this morning (December 18) ahead of rush hour. It comes as traffic has been stopped following a crash involving a car and a motorbike.

Greater Manchester Police says the motorcyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Traffic has been unable to join the M66 from the M62 as a result of the incident. Queues are forming on the M60 and M62 approaching Simister Island as a result.

There are also delays on the M66 southbound passing the scene on the opposite side of the motorway. In its latest update, a National Highways spokesperson said on X: "Traffic has now been released on the #M66 northbound in #GreaterManchester between J4 (#M62) and J3 (#Pilsworth).

2 lanes (of 3) remain closed at this time whilst emergency services are still on scene. "There's over 4 and a half miles of congestion on approach.

Allow extra time."
